The Montgomery County Sheriff's Department is comprised of several divisions. The Warrants Section is responsible for serving criminal and civil warrants. The Courts Section provides security in court rooms and throughout the courthouse, and maintains custody of incarcerated defendants who appear before the courts. The main purpose of the Civil Section is to serve legal documents in civil actions; the Office, Real Estate, Personal Property, and Bookkeeping divisions are part of the Civil Section. The Transportation Section is responsible for the movement of defendants throughout Pennsylvania and the United States; this section also contains the Detention Area, where prisoners are temporarily held for court proceedings. The Special Services Section is primarily responsible for the issuance of gun permits (licenses to carry concealed firearms.) In addition to these sections, the Sheriff's Department provides several programs: the Bomb Squad, D.A.R.E., TRIAD, C.E.R.T., and D.U.I. Central Processing centers.
