As of 2005, there are 78 full-time commissioned officers, 10 commissioned reserve officers, and 25 civilian employees. The city now has a population of just over 50,000 and the jurisdiction covers about 21 square miles.
The police department is a Central Communications Center dispatching for Blue Springs Police and Central Jackson County Fire/EMS Department. All telecommunicators are trained as Emergency Medical Dispatchers. Blue Springs was the first 911 emergency communications center in the state of Missouri serving as the pilot program in 1975. The police department has been very progressive and innovative in the areas of training and equipment.
