The department is housed in three locations: headquarters in Golden, a south precinct in the Ken Caryl area of south Jeffco, and a mountain precinct in Evergreen.
The Sheriff's Office has grown and advanced along with its communities. Today, it is one of the most progressive law enforcement agencies in the nation. Highly specialized in-house units include K-9, SWAT, Bomb Squad, Criminalistics, Victim Services and the Communication Center. The Sheriff's Office also operates the county jail, which underwent an expansion in 2000.
Along with its progressive technologies and policies, the Sheriff's Office employs the trappings of tradition and history. Officers' uniforms are forest green, in keeping with the tradition of the agency. Patrol vehicles, beginning in 2005, now adhere to a classic black and white design.
The sheriff of Jefferson County is an elected public official. The sheriff and his appointed undersheriff serve four years per term.
